When I tell people that I sell high-end watch parts, most people look at me like I'm crazy. 9 times out of 10 their reaction is the same- "You sell what?. After explaining the business to them and talking about the online store, the next question is always "How did you get started?" I figured since I get this question all the time, I may as well write a blog post about it.
It all started when a family member of mine needed a rose gold link for his solid gold Cartier watch. You would think that after spending thousands of dollars on a high-end timepiece the Cartier store would be more than willing to help a customer source a part. However, we shortly realized that this was not the case. None of the Cartier Authorized Dealers around had the gold link in stock for the Tank Americaine, and thus would have to source it from Cartier direct in Switzerland. Fair enough, you might say, but the fact that it would take up to 3 months to fulfill the order was unacceptable. On top of that, the part was not cheap, with the single gold link costing north of $500 before tax.
Disappointed, we realized there had to be a better way for high-end watch collectors to source the parts they desperately needed. With hundreds of grey market watch dealers around the world, surely someone would have the link sitting in their store drawers? We began calling around and soon enough we found the link from a United States based grey market watch dealer.
After this long and frustrating experience with the Cartier AD, we recognized that other watch enthusiasts all over the world must have the same problem that we had from time to time . All genuine watch accessories: straps, links, buckles, boxes, paperwork, bracelets, etc. can be difficult to source through Authorized Dealers for various reasons. Perhaps you need a special size, your timepiece is discontinued (so you can't get parts for it), or the local AD flat out won't sell that box set to you without buying another watch from them.
